• Mediation is an assisted negotiation for the resolution of a dispute with the help of a neutral third party, following an agreement between the parties to mediate.
  • Civil and commercial disputes are eligible for mediation according to the Greek Mediation Act (Law No. 4512/2018).
  • The mediator is a neutral third party who has undergone special training and is asked to take on the mediation in an appropriate, efficient and impartial manner.
  • Each party attends the mediation accompanied by their legal counsel whose presence is usually required by law.

The 6 stages of the mediation process

  • Stage 1 (pre-mediation): preliminary meetings with the parties, preparation, agreement to mediate etc.
  • Stage 2: mediator’s and parties’ introductory statements
  • Stage 3: difining issues, exhanging positions and interests
  • Stage 4: negotiations, joint and separate meetings, reaching an agreement
  • Stage 5: finalizing the agreement, closing of the process
  • Stage 6: follow-up on agreement reached
